What is a mutual action plan?
It is a shared list of steps from today to signature, with a date and an owner on each step. Some owners work for you and some work for the buyer, and both sides agree to it.
This writer drafts the plan from the deal, the people and the target date. You read it, fix the dates and send it to the buyer as a draft.
The mutual action plan template
| Step | Owner | Date | Done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical review | Our engineer and their IT lead | 2 weeks before signature | |
| Commercial agreement | Our rep and their budget owner | 1 week before signature | |
| Legal review | Our rep and their legal contact | 10 days before signature | |
| Signature | Their signer | Target date |
Every step has a name on their side, or it is not mutual.
Frequently asked questions
What is a mutual action plan?
A shared list of steps from today to signature. Each step has a date and an owner, and some of the owners are on the buyer side. Both sides agree to it.
When should I send it?
After the first call where the buyer shows real interest, once you know roughly when they want to go live. Send it as a draft and ask them to change it.
Why does every step need a name on their side?
A step with no name on the buyer side is your to-do list, not a shared plan. If nobody on their side owns a step, it will slip.
What should I write in the four boxes?
What they are buying, who is involved on their side, the date they want to go live or sign, and what has happened so far. The last box matters most: it needs at least ten characters.
How many plans can I write?
Five a day, free. Your first one needs nothing. After that, give your work email to keep going.
